Rich Miano wanted to be a University of Hawai'i player so much he paid for the membership, joining the Warriors as a non-scholarship player in 1980.

Nearly three decades later — after an all-conference career as a UH safety, 11 years as a National Football League player and nine as a UH assistant coach — Miano remains grateful.

"In the world of college football, we take so much for granted," said Miano, who will be promoted to associate head coach today. "I feel blessed to be at my alma mater for this long, and hopefully a lot longer."

Miano will continue to coach the defensive secondary, coordinate the walk-on program, and serve as the liaison for pro scouting and all-star bowls. He also will remain active in recruiting. He recruited Colt Brennan, Adam Leonard, Leonard Peters, Isa'ako Sopoaga, Melila Purcell III, Tala Esera, Larry Sauafea and David Veikune.

He also is co-founder of the Hawai'i Speed and Quickness Clinic, which has expanded to offering after-school programs throughout the state.

"It's an honor to work here," Miano said. "I've always told people, after playing pro football, (coaching at UH) is the only job in the world that I ever wanted. I'm very thankful."
