Hinckley funeral on tabernacle TV

Funeral services for Gordon B. Hinckley, the president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints who died Sunday, will be broadcast live at 8 a.m. tomorrow at the Honolulu Tabernacle, 1560 S. Beretania St.

The broadcast of the funeral and graveside services will originate from the 21,000-seat Conference Center in Salt Lake City and will be aired via satellite in 69 languages to more than 6,000 church buildings globally.

Hinckley, who led the Mormon church through 12 years of global expansion, died at age 97. He was the 15th president in the 177-year history of the church and had served as its president since 1995.

The two temples here — the La'ie Hawai'i Temple and the Kona Hawai'i Temple — will be closed tomorrow for the funeral. Information: 358-6935.

BISHOP TO UNVEIL PASTORAL PLAN

Bishop Larry Silva will unveil a five-year pastoral plan for the Roman Catholic Diocese of Honolulu during two services Feb. 9 and 10.

Among the top items of interest in "Witness to Jesus: Diocesan Road Map for Pastoral, Program and Facility Needs" — the strategic plan that will be released at the 5 p.m. Mass Feb. 9 at Christ the King in Maui and 10 a.m. Mass Feb. 10 at the Cathedral of Our Lady of Peace on O'ahu — are plans to open a diocesan Youth Ministry office.

It will also focus on: new parishes, facilities and management of land assets; repair and maintenance of church and school facilities; leadership development of clergy, lay staff and volunteers; youth and young adult programs; faith formation and homelessness issues.

RADIO-STYLE SHOW BENEFITS CHARITY

"Hawaiian Homeless Companion," a radio-style variety show ala "A Prairie Home Companion," will be at 6 p.m. Feb. 16 at Calvary By the Sea Lutheran Church in 'Aina Haina. The pre-show begins at 5:30 p.m.

The show benefits Angel Network Charities and will be hosted by Jon Osorio with Billy Sage. BluWater Grill food and beverages will be available for sale before the show.

MCC STUDY GROUP MEETINGS

The 'Ohana MCC Study Group will meet at 7 p.m. every second Thursday of the month in the staff room at St. Clement's at 1515 Wilder Ave.

The first meeting will be Feb. 14, with the topic "Homosexuality and the Bible (Part 1 is called 'Detox: Moving on from Fundamentalism')," led by the Rev. Dr. Jonipher Kwong.

BOOK-RELEASE PARTY THURSDAY

Church of the Crossroads will have a book-release party for the Rev. Neal MacPherson's new book, "Church at a Crossroads: Being the Church after Christendom," published by Wipf & Stock of Eugene, Ore.

The book party will be at 4:30 p.m. Thursday in Weaver Hall, Church of the Crossroads, 1212 University Ave.

On hand will be the author, as well as Douglas John Hall, professor emeritus of Christian theology at McGill University in Montreal, who contributed a foreword to the book.
