No lights out for basketball tourneys

By Wes Nakama
Advertiser Staff Writer

It was 'round-the-clock roundball yesterday at two O'ahu high school boys basketball tournaments, as the Saint Francis Merv Lopes Hoops Classic III on the Windward side and Na Menehune Reebok Holiday Classic at Moanalua scrambled to make up games postponed by Friday's island-wide blackout.

Each tournament has a 16-team field, meaning their original schedules were already jammed with games starting at 9 a.m. or 10 a.m. each day.

At the Merv Lopes Classic around 7 p.m. Friday, the power at Kane'ohe's King Armory went out with 29 seconds remaining in the first half of the Kalaheo-Roosevelt game — leaving players, coaches, officials and about 800 fans literally in the dark.

"It was terrible, pitch black," said Sol Batoon, the tournament's director. "But everybody was cool and just waited on the floor. Then the lights came back on and we thought we could continue ... and then there was a big blast and the lights went out for good after that."

There still were two first-round games scheduled after the Kalaheo-Roosevelt matchup Friday, with a full slate of quarterfinal and consolation bracket games scheduled for yesterday starting at 10 a.m.

Batoon and the teams agreed to resume the Kalaheo-Roosevelt game at 7 a.m. yesterday followed by the other two outstanding first-round games, but power still was not restored at the Armory by then.

So the tournament moved to Kalaheo Gym in Kailua, until power finally was restored at the Armory between 3 p.m. and 4 p.m.

Among the 16 teams in the field are three from the Mainland: De La Salle (Concord, Calif.), Campbell Hall (North Hollywood, Calif.) and Wasilla (Alaska).

Campbell Hall and Wasilla had to play two games yesterday.

"Everybody was real good about it, there were no problems," Batoon said early last night. "This was such a difficult thing, but we're lucky we have a lot of good people who are willing to help. It all turned out well."

The last quarterfinal game between Punahou and Mililani ended by 10:45 p.m.

At Moanalua, the power went out Friday night just before halftime of the first-round game between Menlo (Atherton, Calif.) and Campbell.

Moanalua's gym is equipped with emergency auxiliary floodlights, but the court still was not sufficiently lighted for play.

"When we heard that the blackout was island-wide, we knew right there that we would have to postpone the rest of the games," said Moanalua athletic director Joel Kawachi.

The Menlo-Campbell game was rescheduled for 7:30 a.m. yesterday, but power was not restored until 10 minutes after that and the game resumed at 8:30. It was followed by another first-round game between Maryknoll and Baldwin, but the original schedule had consolation bracket games starting at 9 a.m., so everything got pushed back by at least two hours. Menlo, Campbell, Baldwin and Maryknoll each played two games yesterday.

As of 7:45 last night, there still were 2 1/2 games left to be played, so the action pushed on toward the midnight hour.

"We've had a full day of basketball," Kawachi said at 7:50 p.m., "and we've still got a long way to go."

The tournaments will take a day off today before resuming tomorrow with games starting at 9 a.m. (at Moanalua) and 10 a.m. (at King Armory). Both tournaments wrap up on Tuesday.

OIA SOCCER POSTPONED

All 25 O'ahu Interscholastic Association boys and girls soccer games scheduled for yesterday were postponed due to weather and the blackout aftermath, with make-up dates yet to be announced.

The Interscholastic League of Honolulu played its schedule of games in entirety.
