Lagoon Drive just south of Ke'ehi Lagoon Beach Park will be closed to the public starting at 1:30 p.m. today in anticipation of President-elect Barack Obama's return to his hometown around 3:25 p.m., the state Department of Transportation said.

Obama will be flying in to a private commuter terminal off of Lagoon Drive, which should not affect operations at adjacent Honolulu International Airport, said DOT spokeswoman Tammy Mori.

"Otherwise, it's business as usual," she said.

Employees with proper credentials who work at flight schools and parcel service companies on Lagoon Drive will be allowed through security checkpoints, Mori said.

Obama and his family are scheduled to arrive in Honolulu today about 3:25 p.m. They will spend their 10-day visit in the Islands in a sprawling, beachfront property on the far-end Kailuana Place in Kailua, which was cut off to all but local traffic this morning.
