Police seek driver in Big Isle fatality

A 43-year-old man died early yesterday on the Big Island after he was struck by a hit-and-run driver while walking on Hokulani Boulevard in the Hawaii Ocean View Ranchos subdivision in Ka'u.

A subdivision resident found the man in the road around 1:08 a.m. yesterday. Police said the driver fled.

The victim was taken to Kona Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 10:11 a.m. His name was withheld pending notification of next of kin.

Anyone with information about the case is asked to call Officer Marvin Troutman at 326-4646, ext. 229.



UNIONS ORGANIZE AUW BENEFIT SALE

Aloha United Way, the AFL-CIO and other Hawai'i labor unions have organized an enormous "garage sale" at McKinley High School tomorrow to benefit Aloha United Way.

The first "Labor Cares: The Island's Best Garage Sale" has generated donations that have filled two 15-foot trucks. Donations include new clothes, electronics, toys and "tons of teddy bears," said Lynn Ching, Aloha United Way's labor vice president.



MAN INDICTED IN ASSAULT OF GIRL, 13

A University of Hawai'i janitor has been indicted by an O'ahu grand jury in the sexual assault of a 13-year-old girl in early October.

The indictment accuses Ward Kiyo Gusukuma of two counts of sexual assault in the third degree, one count of attempted sexual assault in the third degree, three counts of attempted sexual assault in the first degree and one count of sexual assault in the first degree. Gusukuma, 43, of Hawai'i Kai, is accused of having sex with the girl Oct. 7 or Oct. 8.
