Michelle Wie moved into a tie for the lead during after the second day of the LPGA Tour's qualifying tournament after a 7-under-par round.

The 19-year-old, who is trying to gain playing privileges on golf's top professional women's circuit for the first time, is at 10-under overall after a 69 yesterday. She's tied with Shiho Oyama, who carded a 70 today after an opening-round 64.

The top 20 finishers in the five-round tournament will earn full-time status on the LPGA Tour for 2009. If there's a tie for the final spot, a playoff will be held.

Wie shot 65 today on the Champions course at the LPGA International golf club in Daytona Beach, Fla. While she has drawn most of the attention at the event, Wie has said she won't speak with reporters until after the final round on Dec. 7.

With Hall of Fame player Annika Sorenstam retiring after this past season, Wie — who made the cut for weekend play in an LPGA tournament as a 13-year-old — would likely increase attention on the women's golf tour, which recently dropped three events from its schedule due to the global economic crisis.

Although Wie hasn't won a tournament since capturing the 2003 U.S. Women's Public Links championship and has missed the 36-hole cut in eight men's golf events that she has entered, she is one of golf's biggest attractions. She ranked fifth on Forbes Magazine's 2008 list of highest-paid female athletes with $12 million worth of agreements with Nike Inc. and Sony Corp.

After earning $62,763 in seven events this past season, Wie failed to gain full-time LPGA playing rights for 2009. The top 80 money winners get their card for the following season and another 40 have to qualify. Playing on sponsors' invitations that drew criticism from Sorenstam and other LPGA members, Wie's total would have placed her 116th on the list.

During the past two years, Wie has battled a wrist injury; withdrew from the 2007 Ginn Tribute tournament when she was close to shooting 88, a score that could have led to a suspension from LPGA events; and was disqualified from this year's State Farm Classic after forgetting to sign her scorecard.
