WASHINGTON — The University of Hawai'i has received a $129,000 grant to help strengthen career and technical education programs, the U.S. Department of Education announced today.

The money will go to a partnership of the state Department of Education, the university, the state community college system, statewide workforce agencies, and business and industry advisory councils for developing programs in the health science fields.

One program would explore ways to extract grades and other assessments so high school transcripts can be transferred to a post-secondary schools in a timely manner, according to the grant proposal.

"The requirement for such a system is especially important to states like Hawai'i where the use of Social Security numbers of high school students is prohibited and the electronic transfer of records between secondary and post-secondary systems within the state does not currently exist," the proposal said.
