The United States indoor volleyball team will face Italy in the Olympic Games quarterfinals Tuesday at the Capital Indoor Stadium in Beijing.
The match is scheduled for 4 a.m. Hawai'i time (10 p.m. in Beijing).
The U.S. team includes former University of Hawai'i players Robyn Ah Mow-Santos, Heather Bown and Kim Willoughby and Punahou alum Lindsey Berg.
Quarterfinal matchups were determined by the top-ranked team in each pool earning the right to play the fourth-place team in the opposite pool. Meanwhile, a drawing of lots selected the crossover opponents for the second- and third-place teams from the preliminary round. The second-place team in the two pools — the United States and Italy — will have to meet in the quarterfinals despite both holding a 4-1 records in the preliminary round.
The U.S. has never played Italy during the Olympic Games. However, it does hold a 25-23 lead in the all-time series since 1983.
Team USA finished Pool A behind undefeated Cuba. Host China (3-2) finished third in the group after defeating fourth-place Japan (2-3) tonight. Poland (1-4) and Venezuela (0-5) failed to advance out of Pool A.
Brazil won Pool B with a 5-0 record to gain the group's top seed after defeating Italy (4-1) early today. Russia (3-2) earned the third-seed out of Pool B after knocking off fourth-place Serbia (2-3) in the final pool match of the day. Kazakhstan (1-5) and Algeria (0-5) did not advance to the quarterfinals out of Pool B.
