Wie shoots 3-over 75, way back in LPGA event

Advertiser Staff

A double bogey and more bogeys thereafter derailed a good start for Honolulu golfer Michelle Wie.

Wie shot a 3-over-par 75 today in the Canadian Women's Open in Ottawa. It is her final LPGA Tournament appearance of the year.

She is in 89th place with a few players still not finished among the field of 155 golfers. After tomorrow's second round, the field will be cut in about half (top 70 and ties) for weekend play.

The 18-year-old Punahou School graduate started well with birdies on the first and third holes to go 2-under. But a double-bogey 7 on the par-5 sixth hole set her on a downward spiral.

She made the turn at even-par 36 and then had bogeys on the par-4 13th, par-4 16th and par-3 17th for a back-nine score of 3-over 39.

In her previous tournament — the PGA Tour's Legends Reno-Tahoe Open — Wie shot 73-80 and missed the cut. Her tournament before that, she shot a second-round 65 but forgot to sign her scorecard and was disqualified after her third round.
