Every day is Earth Day at the University of Hawai'i's Saunders Hall, where students, faculty and staff have been working to turn the social sciences building into a model of sustainability.

Recent efforts include removing 250 lights bulbs to reduce the energy load by about 245 kilowatthours a week, implementing the most complete recycling program on campus, studying the seven-story building's waste stream and retrofitting sixth-floor bathrooms with water-saving devices such as sensor faucets, low-flow toilets and waterless urinals.

Future efforts include a rain catchment system for watering plants and installation of a rooftop wind turbine.

SUSTAINABILITY FEST AT UH-MANOA

The "Sustainable Saunders" team spreads the gospel of green today by hosting its second annual Sustainability Fest from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. on Hawai'i Hall's lawn.

Open-air marketplace from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., with art and plant sales, technology demonstrations, educational booths, food and more. UH students can participate in a scavenger hunt to win a balsa wood surfboard and other prizes.

Free concert from 5 to 11 p.m.

eWaste Recycling Drop-Off Zone will be open from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. to accept computers, monitors, keyboards and peripherals for a fee. Other items that can be recycled include HI-5¢ containers, white and colored paper, newsprint, cardboard, phone books, UH catalogs and course schedules and cell phones.

Sierra Club will give a reusable grocery bag or CFL light bulb to anyone who brings a HI-5¢ container to its booth.
