City to expand curbside recycling into a dozen areas

The city has been doing curbside recycling in Mililani and Hawai'i Kai since October.

The city announced today that it will begin curbside pickup of recyclable items in neighborhoods around O'ahu.

Curbside recycling began in October in Hawai'i Kai and Mililani.

It will begin in November in:

• Kuli'ou'ou to Manoa;

• Mokule'ia to Sunset Beach;

• Kailua, 'Aikahi, Lanikai, Enchanted Lake and Maunawili;

That phase will add 40,000 homes to the curbside recycling program.

In May 2009, these neighborhoods will be added:

• Waipi'o Gentry to Halawa;

• Wahiawa and Whitmore Village;

• Waipi'o Estates;

• Kane'ohe;

• Waimanalo.

In November 2009, these neighborhoods will be added:

• Makiki to Moanalua;

• Sunset Beach to Kahaluu.

In May 2010, the city will add:

• Waipahu;

• Waikele;

• Kapolei;

• Makua to Honokai Hale.

At that time, the city said, 160,000 homes will have curbside recycling.
