Portion of Kauai campground closed

LIHU'E, Kaua'i — State officials are closing a portion of the Kalalau campground in the Na Pali Coast State Wilderness Park to protect visitors from possible falling rock.
The Department of Land and Natural Resources says the closure will affect 16 campsites on the segment of the Kalalau trail between the self-composting toilet facility and Kolea Falls. Signs warning of possible falling rock and informing visitors of closed areas have been posted.
The toilet facility will remain open with an alternate access route.
Officials say the closure is based on an evaluation of high risk rockfall areas conducted by the firm Earth Tech. A more detailed rockfall assessment to guide relocation of facilities and the design of safety measures is planned.
