Preps: Lunas' Okano goes 2-2 at national meet

By The Maui News

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — Lahainaluna High School's Travis Okano, the third three-time state champion in Maui Interscholastic League history, went 2-2 at the High School Senior National Wrestling Championships over the weekend.

Okano defeated Drew Bloss of New York 10-8 in his first match before losing 11-2 to New Jersey's Bob Dabal in the second round.

Okano, a senior who won Hawai'i state titles at 119, 125 and 130 pounds the last three years, stayed alive in the national tournament with a 3-1 win over North Carolina's Jose Sanchez.

Okano was eliminated when he was pinned in 3 minutes, 10 seconds by Michigan's Christian Cullinan on Saturday.

The competition was limited to state champions or runners-up who are current high school seniors.

The lone exceptions to the entrance requirements were California, allowed to send top-eight finishers; and New York, New Jersey and Indiana, who were allowed to send top-four finishers.
