Think big.
That was the message Mayor Mufi Hannemann gave to residents at a meeting in Waipahu earlier this week on the topic of what kinds of development should occur in and around transit stations planned for their community.
"At the end of the day, it has to be what you want," the mayor said to those attending the meeting. He's right.
The development surrounding the roughly 20 planned transit stations — or transit-oriented development — presents a rare opportunity for the public to shape substantial development in their individual communities. And that's no small matter: This development will define the look and the feel of our communities for generations to come.
With limited land and resources, it's not often that the public is called on to share their vision in this way. Maintaining each community's individuality is key. What works in Waipahu might not work best in Kapolei. That's why your input is crucial.
Suggestions from the Waipahu session included more affordable-housing, eateries, businesses and senior citizen-friendly development.
Successful transit oriented developments in other cities include a healthy blend of commercial and residential projects, with a focus on allowing people to live, work and play within walking distance of these stations.
Waipahu was the first community to weigh in; others will soon have their chance.
So start thinking about what you would like to see in your area, and watch for the city's schedule of meetings, which is due out soon.
And remember: Think big.
