The death of a bicyclist Wednesday at Haleakala National Park — the third such fatality in 10 months — has prompted park officials to call a mandatory meeting next week with all seven bicycle tour permit holders to review safety procedures.

The park is undergoing a review of all commercial providers doing business inside the park and is creating a commercial services plan to manage them.

The person who died Wednesday was identified by park officials yesterday as Roberta Blake, 65, of Amherst, Ohio.

Witnesses told investigators Blake had ridden down nine miles of curved road, descending 3,000 feet, with a Maui Mountain Cruisers downhill tour when she lost control of her bicycle, crossed the double yellow center line and either fell or purposely went to the ground before being struck by an uphill-bound Maui Downhill Co. tour van, park officials said in a news release yesterday.

The van driver could not have prevented the accident, the witnesses said.

The other bicycle fatalities at the park occurred in November 2006 and March 2007.

MAN, 42, ARRESTED IN JEWEL ROBBERY

Charges were pending yesterday against a 42-year-old man in connection with the Sept. 15 armed robbery of Hallmark Jewelers at Ala Moana Center.

Police arrested the man yesterday at his Birch Street residence near Ala Moana Center at 4:45 p.m.

He was booked for investigation of first-degree robbery, third-degree promotion of a dangerous drug and possession of drug paraphernalia.

The man has 14 prior convictions between November 1989 and January 2006, according to the Hawai'i Criminal Justice Data Center.

A woman, 26, was arrested at the same address for first-degree hindering prosecution.

Police said the man was identified from surveillance tapes.

According to police, the man displayed the butt of a handgun in his waist to a male employee, 42, and left the store with expensive items he had asked to see. The employee was ordered not to follow him.

BIG ISLE FISHERMAN PULLED FROM WATER

Big Island firefighters on Wednesday rescued a fisherman who had been swept into the ocean near 'Opihikao.

Firefighters received a call for help about 1:55 p.m. and the man was found a few minutes later in ocean waters fronting a graveyard at the end of Kamaili Road.

The county helicopter and a rescue swimmer came to the aid of the 42-year-old man, who was spotted holding on to a cooler he was using as a flotation device.

The pilot lowered the rescue swimmer into the water. Both men were airlifted to shore.

The rescued man reported no injuries and paramedics were not needed, fire officials said.

SECOND MAN ARRESTED IN HOME INVASION

Police yesterday arrested a 21-year-old Kailua man as a second suspect in a Hawai'i Kai home invasion robbery investigation.

The man was arrested at 3 p.m. at Sea Life Park.

On Wednesday, Crime Reduction Unit officers from the East Honolulu police district arrested a 24-year-old man, at his Hawai'i Kai home in connection with the same investigation.

Both men were booked for investigation of first-degree robbery and burglary.

The man arrested yesterday is also being held at the main police station cellblock on two outstanding warrants totaling $800.

Police said two men armed with weapons allegedly forced their way into a Hawai'i Kai home at 7:30 p.m. on June 3, threatened harm to a 20-year-old male resident and ordered him to show them the location of a safe in the house.

On Aug. 30, the victim picked the two suspects out of a photo lineup.

THREE AT HONOKAI HALE ARRESTED IN BRAWL

Police yesterday arrested a 21-year-old man at his Honokai Hale home on Pa'akai Street for investigation of attempted second-degree murder stemming from injuries suffered by a man struck by a vehicle during an early morning brawl Sept. 9 in Kailua.

Another man, also 21, was arrested at the same home yesterday for allegedly intimidating a witness in the case. He was released pending further investigation.

On Monday, police arrested an 18-year-old woman living at the same home on suspicion of attempted second-degree murder. She was released pending further investigation.

BOYS HELP POLICE APPREHEND ROBBER

A 16-year-old boy was arrested Wednesday on suspicion of two counts of second-degree robbery after he allegedly robbed two boys of their possessions and money at a Kalihi bus stop and then tried to rob a third boy.

Police were told that the older boy threatened to beat up the first two boys, ages 14 and 15, if they did not comply with his demands.

After the two boys did as they were told, the older boy allegedly approached another youth and demanded the same from him.

The third boy managed to push the older boy to the ground and the first two boys helped pin him down until officers arrived.

$200,000 DAMAGE IN PAHOA FIRE

Big Island firefighters on Wednesday extinguished a structure fire in Pahoa.

Pahoa firefighters needed about 10 minutes to put out the fire at 15-0522 Limu St. The fire, which was reported at 1:04 p.m., destroyed a 30- by 40-foot, single-story wooden building with an aluminum roof.

Officials said the building, which was not occupied, was engulfed by flames when firefighters arrived. Damage was estimated at $200,000.
