Farrington quarterback Alefosiu Iu didn't have a perfect game last night against Kalaheo. But he was pretty darn close.

Iu, a senior southpaw, completed 10 of 11 passes for 205 yards and three touchdowns as Farrington beat Kalaheo, 39-18, in an O'ahu Interscholastic Association Red East game at Roosevelt.

"He stepped up as far as his passing game," Governors coach Randall Okimoto said. "He wanted to show he could play."

Farrington improved to 3-1-1 overall and 3-0 in league play. Kalaheo dropped to 4-2 and 2-2.

Farrington and Kahuku are tied atop the Red East.

After the game, Iu was thankful for getting the chance to fire away.

"I'm just happy that our coach decided to pass more," Iu said. "Thanks for giving me the opportunity to throw the ball."

Kalaheo stacked the line of scrimmage to stop the run and was susceptible to the passing game.

"We had to sell out to stop their run because we felt they had a big advantage there," Kalaheo coach Chris Mellor said. "The play-action can kill that as you know."

Iu was most effective when rolling out.

"I like to go left," he said. "I like running and throwing the ball at the same time."

Governors receiver Matt Stowers had three receptions for 121 yards. The catches went for 37, 46 and 38 yards, and they all advanced the ball inside the Kalaheo 5-yard line and led to scores.

"Throughout this whole week, we practiced that boot leg and the post-corner plays and it worked out really well today," Iu said.

Dayton Kealoha caught two touchdown passes and Ani Isumu had one for the Governors. Joshua Fernandez had 22 carries for 63 yards and three touchdowns.

"We thought we could run more, but that team actually gave us a problem so we had to throw the football. We had to execute," Okimoto said.

Kalaheo took a 7-6 lead after Bruce Andrews' 93-yard kickoff return for a touchdown with 5:44 left before halftime. Farrington then scored 26 unanswered points.

"I'm not really disappointed in the boys," Mellor said. "I know they're playing hard. If it doesn't work out right, it doesn't work out right. They play hard football all the time."

The Mustangs' Cody vonAppen threw four interceptions, and finished 13 of 33 for 162 yards. Kalaheo also lost two muffed punts in the third period.

Farrington scored 20 points off the turnovers.

"Nothing seemed to go right," Mellor said. "It was a tough game."

The Governors, who often had good field position because of Kalaheo's turnovers, finished with 325 total yards.

The Mustangs finished with 247.

"It was a challenge for us to hold down their skills guys," Okimoto said. "They've been scoring points the last few games."

Junior Mataafa rushed 12 times for 167 yards and St. John Lessary carried the ball six times for 115 yards as the host Red Raiders beat the Tigers in an OIA Red East game.

Mataafa and Lessary also caught touchdown passes from Jray Galeai for Kahuku, which remained unbeaten in league play.

Kahuku's Shiloah Te'o had an 8-yard interception return for a touchdown and caught a 1-yard touchdown pass from Galeai.
