KAHULUI
Awareness day for nene Wednesday

Advertiser Staff

Wildlife officials will celebrate Nene Awareness Day on Wednesday by providing information and gifts from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Ka'ahumanu Center.

The booth will be staffed by biologists and volunteers from the state Division of Forestry and Wildlife, Haleakala National Park and the Friends of Haleakala National Park.

Meanwhile at the park, gifts and special talks on the nene, the state bird, will be offered.

After dwindling to a little more than two dozen, the nene population now numbers 1,400 to 1,500 on Kaua'i, Moloka'i, Maui and Hawai'i Island. They are believed to be the rarest geese in the world.

Correction: Nene Awareness Day activities will be held Wednesday at Ka'ahumanu Center and Haleakala National Park. A previous version of this story gave the wrong day.
