1. Transportation-HUD spending bill

The Senate approved a $106 billion spending bill for transportation and housing Wednesday by a vote of 88-7. The Senate version must now be reconciled with a similar House version. President Bush has threatened to veto the bill, which is about $4 billion more than he requested. The bill includes money for bridge repair, Amtrak, rural air service, community development projects, and counseling to help homeowners facing foreclosure.

WHAT'S AHEAD

The Senate plans to resume work on the 2008 Defense Department authorization bill if lawmakers can agree on ground rules for consideration of Iraq war policy amendments.

The House expects to vote on the Terrorism Risk Insurance Revision and Extension Act, which would expand the federally subsidized program created after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorism attacks. Under the program, the federal government helps commercial property and casualty insurers cover losses caused by foreign terrorist acts.

The House also may vote on a bill that would require a voter-verifiable paper ballot in every voting system in the United States and a bill to allow the Federal Housing Association to insure more mortgages to help borrowers refinance unaffordable loans.
