BYUH wins Challenge soccer

Trent Read scored seven minutes into the second overtime period as Brigham Young-Hawai'i defeated Hawai'i-Hilo, 4-3, last night in the championship game of the Hawai'i College Challenge Cup at War Memorial Stadium in Wailuku, Maui.

Shawn Blymiller scored two goals and Sam Akinaka one as BYUH (4-1) surged to a 3-1 lead with less than 10 minutes left in regulation.

But Hilo (3-4) scored twice, including the tying goal with a second left, to force extra play.

In the third-place match, Adam Rieke and Thimo Langner each had two goals and an assist as Hawai'i Pacific beat Chaminade, 4-1.

Rieke scored in the 10th minute, taking a pass from Langner and sending the ball past Chaminade goalie Darren Smith, who finished with nine saves.

Langner scored at the 34th and 60th minutes as the Sea Warriors (1-3) surged to a 3-0 lead.

Marc Contee scored in the 65th minute for Chaminade (0-4-1).

Rieke closed the scoring in the 88th minute.

WOMEN'S SOCCER



BYUH BLANKS CU, 2-0

Jill Haar and Natasha Aiono scored as Brigham Young-Hawai'i defeated Chaminade, 2-0, in a women's match at La'ie.

Haar scored in the 27th minute from point-bank range after a nice pass from Kristi Astin and a tip of the ball by Sara Welty.

Aiono scored in the 81st minute on a header following a crossing pass from Allisa Dayley as the Seasiders (1-2-1) outshot the Silverswords (0-3) 29-0.

Chaminade goalie Marissa Minor made 14 saves.

PACIFIC PREVAILS

Bunny Dickson, off an assist from 'Iolani alum Sammi Teramae, scored in the 30th minute as Pacific beat Tennessee-Martin, 1-0, last night in the Outrigger Hotels & Resorts Soccer Classic at Waipi'o Peninsula Soccer Stadium.

Hawai'i (2-0-1) plays Tennessee-Martin (1-1-0) tonight at 5 in the tournament finale.

CROSS COUNTRY



HPU, HILO TRIUMPH

Hawai'i Pacific swept the top three places to win the men's division of the Brigham Young-Hawai'i Invitational yesterday.

Brandon Laan won the 8-kilometer race in 27 minutes, 28 seconds. Jens Munk Nielson (27:37) was second and Esben Dalgaard (27:45) third as the Sea Warriors scored a low-best 21 points.

Hawai'i-Hilo (41) was second and BYUH (64) third. Chaminade did not have enough runners to score.

Hilo, led by a third-place finish by Kari Andrew, won the women's division with 46 points. Andrew finished the 5-kilometer course in 19:29. University of Hawai'i senior Chantelle (Laan) Wilder won in 18:40, followed by BYUH's Amanda Whitford in 19:03.

BYUH (53) finished second, followed by UH (56), HPU (65) and Chaminade (120).


GOLF

TOP JUNIOR SEEDS FALL

All three top seeds in the boys divisions lost their opening-round matches yesterday in the Kaanapali Golf Resort's Hawai'i State Junior Golf Association Match Play Championship.

Eighth-seeded John-David Nako beat top-seeded Bradley Shigezawa, 1-up, in the 15-18 age division; No. 8 Aaron Kunitomo beat No. 1 Lorens Chan, 3 and 1, in the 13-14 division; and No. 8 Jameson Keiley beat No. 1 Kalena Preus, 2-up, in the 11-12 division.

Meanwhile, all three top seeds in the girls division advanced to today's semifinals.

No. 1 Britney Yada beat No. 8 Kaili Britos, 3 and 2, in the 15-18 division; No. 1 Kelli Oride drew a bye in the 13-14 division; and No. 1 Eimi Koga beat No. 8 Kaci Masuda, 5 and 3, in the 11-12 division.

CHANG STRUGGLES

Former Hawai'i quarterback Tim Chang struggled in his second start for the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, throwing four interceptions in a 35-22 loss to the host Toronto Argonauts yesterday.

Chang was pulled late in the third quarter after going 10 for 22 for 75 yards.
