McKee, Cajimat on U.S. junior taekwondo squad

The Hawai'i Sluggers of Honolulu captured the week five title at the Cooperstown (N.Y.) Dreams Park tournament for 12 and under. The Sluggers, who play in the Wai-Kahala League, went 11-0 in the tournament and beat the Mac-N-Seitz Indians of Kansas, 11-5, in the championship game. Jarred McKee and Jayme Cajimat qualified for the U.S. National Junior Male Taekwondo Team with their performances at the team trials that concluded Aug. 26 in Colorado Springs, Colo.

Both athletes went 4-0 in the round-robin event.

McKee, 17, a senior at 'Aiea High School, beat John Porras of Colorado, 6-2, in the bantamweight class (106 to 112 pounds) to earn his berth on the team.

Cajimat, 16, a junior at Damien, beat Tanner McClish of Oklahoma, 5-0, in the flyweight class (105 pounds and under) in his final match to earn a berth.

Both athletes will be on the 20-member team that will compete in the Pan American Taekwondo Championships in Daytona Beach, Fla., Oct. 5 to 6.

McKee and Cajimat, both Olympic hopefuls, train at Oahu Taekwondo.
