MIZ BIZ: Diamond Head Theatre has pulled off a coup: It secured the rights to the Tony Award-winning "Les Misérables," to launch the 2008-09 season. "We have negotiated a long time to get this show and we are the first nonprofessional theater to secure the rights, so John (Rampage) and I are very pleased," said Deena Dray, DHT executive director (Rampage is artistic director).

Plum roles available: Valjean, Javert, Fantine, Eponine, Marius, Cosette, Thénardier, Madame Thénardier, Young Cosette and Gavroche. ...

RANDOM NOTES: When media types assemble for the annual Gridiron Show tonight through Saturday at Diamond Head Theatre, they'll put news to song-and-dance parodies in "Randomly Tested." The cast features veterans Jodi Leong and Ben Gutierrez of KITV, ex-KITV guy Chad Lovell (now at Kamehameha Schools), returnees Lance Rae and Donalyn Dela Cruz and newbie Kristopher De La Cruz (a graphic artist at KHNL/KFVE who was the title character in Paliku Theatre's "You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown").

The Advertiser's Gordon Y.K. Pang, Christine Strobel, Vicki Viotti, Loren Moreno and Jason Kasamoto are in the chorus; KITV's Keoki Kerr and The Advertiser's Robbie Dingeman are artistic directors.

"Peeing in a Cup" will allude to the teachers' contract; "Awana, You're So Canned" (suspiciously like The Beatles' "I Wanna Hold Your Hand") needles Gov. Linda Lingle's personnel woes.

It's a fundraiser for student internships for the Society of Professional Journalists, Hawai'i chapter. Friday and Saturday performances are sold out, but seats ($25 at the door) are available at tonight's 7:30 p.m. dress rehearsal. ...

FILM CLIPS: Alison Eastwood, daughter of the Oscar-winning actor-director Clint Eastwood, has been a last-minute addition to the 27th annual Louis Vuitton Hawaii International Film Festival, opening tonight. Alison is director of "Rails and Ties," which screens at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at Regal Dole Cannery. Also due: Richard Lewis, the producer (not the comedian), whose film "August Rush" is the closing night attraction at 7 p.m. Oct. 27 (actually, one night before the fest's formal finale) at Dole. ...

And Wayne Wang has bowed out of a planned appearance here, though his two films, "Princess of Nebraska" and "A Thousand Years of Good Prayers," still will be shown at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Hawai'i Theatre. ...

Sherry Shaoling, who's been living and working in Los Angeles for the past three months, will be at HIFF. She appears in a short by Seong Kyu Whang, called "Atonement," which screens at 6:30 p.m. Sunday at Dole. Also in the movie: Roy Tjioe and Elitei Tatafu Jr. Shaoling also landed a small speaking part in "Repossession Mambo," a film starring Jude Law and Forest Whitaker, in which she plays a mail-order bride who stands on a rotating turntable wearing a bikini while speaking in a Chinese accent. In Sergio Guerro's sci-fi action adventure "Repeat Offenders," local actor Garret Sato is Hiroshi Katana, the lead role, and Shaoling and Tracy Bautista have roles. Sato will also be at HIFF, since he appears in the short film "Training Dog," which was directed by University of Hawai'i grad Ty Sanga. ...

HOLIDAY TIDINGS: There's a good deal on "Christmas Memories," the holiday show by The Makaha Sons, set for 11 a.m. Dec. 15 at the Hawaii Ballroom of the Sheraton Waikiki hotel.
