AT UH GAME

University of Hawai'i football fans can contribute to The Advertiser Christmas Fund on Saturday at Aloha Stadium.

Advertiser staffers and KGMB TV's Ramsay Wharton and Grace Lee will be at the stadium turnstiles from 3 to 7 p.m. to collect donations for the Christmas fund. Cash, checks and credit-card payments will be accepted.

The Advertiser has collected donations during the holiday season to help needy families and individuals in Hawai'i for more than 50 years. The Christmas Fund is a joint effort of the Advertiser, Helping Hands Hawai'i and KGMB.

HOW TO DONATE

Send checks, payable to "The Advertiser Christmas Fund," to Helping Hands Hawai'i, P.O. Box 17780, Honolulu, HI 96817. Helping Hands accepts credit card donations by telephone, 440-3831. Monetary donations may also be dropped off at any First Hawaiian Bank branch or The Advertiser's cashier desk.

To donate online, go to www.honoluluadvertiser.com and click on the Christmas Fund icon. Monetary donations help operate Community Clearinghouse programs year-round.

The Advertiser's "secret Santa" will match the first $25 of every donation to the fund. The anonymous philanthropist last year pitched in $32,600.

Material goods may be taken to the Community Clearinghouse, 2100 N. Nimitz Highway, near Pu'uhale Road. For large-item pickup and additional information, call 440-3804.

Donations may be made to particular families, but please specify the family. The money will be given in the form of a Wal-Mart, Kmart or Longs gift certificate.

Aleluia Ativalu and Aysa Delos Santos are expecting their first child in January and want to have a stable, healthy home for their baby girl.

The young couple lived in Delos Santos' truck for about a month before they got temporary housing in August. They're trying to find a place they can call home for the long term and live "like a normal family."

Ativalu and Delos Santos are budgeting and saving their money, but they're concerned that they can't afford all the supplies to care for their baby girl.

"We're just worried about the things that we need for our baby when she comes," Ativalu said. "We try to budget our money, and we're just trying to get things that normal families would get.

"We're just hoping to get a place soon and just be settled in and not have to worry."

The couple is relying only on Delos Santos' income as a full-time golf course landscaper, which is just enough to pay for rent and food. Ativalu has been applying for jobs but so far hasn't gotten any calls from employers, although she expects her job prospects will improve after she gives birth.

Ativalu said they're thankful for their studio apartment at Weinberg Village Waimanalo and try to do their part to give back.

Delos Santos, for example, volunteers his time to do landscaping projects at the village and help maintenance workers there.

"We're really grateful," Ativalu said. "We say our prayers every night."

The couple's wish list includes any baby furniture suitable for a small studio apartment, a baby car seat/stroller set, diapers and baby wipes, baby toys, pots and pans, cooking utensils, shoes, a fan, a television stand and a DVD player — they like to watch movies at home and can't afford cable. The couple would also appreciate membership to the YMCA so they can maintain a healthy lifestyle.

Delos Santos also wants to trade in his truck to get a safer car for his baby and would appreciate any help to repair and repaint the truck. After watching golfers on the course at his landscaping job, he also hopes to one day get a set of golf clubs.

Ativalu wears size 14 pants, L shirts and dresses, and size 11 shoes, and Delos Santos wears size 46 pants, 2X shirts and size 13 shoes.
