The Washington men's soccer team has a proven leader in head coach Dean Wurzberger.

The Huskies have reached the NCAA Tournament 10 of the past 12 years under Wurzberger, including a Sweet 16 appearance in 2003. He was named Pac-10 Coach of the Year in 2004 and earlier this season, he won his 200th career match.

This year, his 16th in Seattle, has had its share of ups and downs, including the loss of his starting goalkeeper in the fourth game of the season.

While at New Mexico on Sept. 14, Rylan Hawkins suffered a broken nose and a chipped tooth in a collision with a Lobos' player. Redshirt freshman Stephen Fung ('Iolani '06 of Honolulu) took over in goal in the 62nd minute.

"He was thrown into the most unexpected circumstances," Wurzberger said. "Stephen was called upon in a very intense situation. He was absolutely brilliant."

Fung completed the shutout as the Huskies won, 1-0.

"That was the start of a great run for him," Wurzberger said. "He's just taken off from there."

Two days later, Fung played all 90 minutes and made four saves in a 3-0 upset of then-No. 3 Southern Methodist.

"He's getting incredible experience as a goalkeeper. He's continued to learn, has learned from his errors, keeps the right attitude and we're very pleased with him," Wurzberger said. "The team can win with Stephen in goal. Had he been unable to answer the call, we'd be in a real problem."

Washington stands at 8-7-2 overall and 3-4-1 in the Pac-10 with games left at Oregon State today and a non-conference game at San Diego State Sunday.

Sophomore midfielder Daniel Phelps (Leilehua '06 of Wahiawa) is also on the roster.

"He's very versatile and athletically gifted," Wurzberger said. "He's a sub that we value. Daniel's always been the first in line to help the team, the kind of guy you need."
