Pac-Five's Ryan Dolan and 'Iolani's Julia Anderson won individual titles and helped their teams pull ahead at the Interscholastic League of Honolulu kayaking championships.

Dolan, a senior who attends Maryknoll, won the boys race in 9 minutes, 34.64 seconds, and Pac-Five narrowly edged Kamehameha 21-23 for the boys team title yesterday morning at Ke'ehi Lagoon.

Anderson won the girls race in 11:32.04 and the Raiders won their third straight team title with a low-best 18 points. Punahou was second with 25.

"These girls are so cohesive," 'Iolani coach Eric Chun said. "The girls have been on a build the past three, four years. This is a real mature team and this is their third championship. It's the character of this team."

Anderson started to build a lead halfway through the 2,000-meter race, though she was never comfortable with the margin against a field that included teammate Marisa Why, a two-time league champion, and Punahou's Rachel Fujita, who won three races this year.

"All year it's been different people ahead so it was really a tossup," Anderson said. "I'm always afraid that I'm going to get caught at the end. It's a process of who's going to be at the other end of it."

'Iolani had won all of the ILH races this season, except for the last one on Oct. 27 when Punahou came out on top.

"We came into the championship actually with a big challenge," Chun. "Their top four kayakers are really tough."

Kamehameha's Hoku Keala was second in 11:46.31, followed by Chenoa Twogood of Le Jardin in 11:48.20.

The top four kayakers for each school counted toward the team score.

In the boys race, Dolan also pulled away from competition halfway through the 2,000-meter race. Kamehameha's Kaihe Chong, last year's winner, was second in 9:51.31 and teammate Bobby-John Campbell was third in 10:04.21.

"I always like to take the first lap to see what's going on, see where everybody is," Dolan said. "If they're close, hang with them for a little bit and see what they can do, but in time I'll pull away. But today was close."

Dolan didn't lose an ILH race this year, a big difference from last year where he was usually fifth or sixth. A serious offseason training program helped open things up.

"It was kind of a shock to me at the beginning (of the season) but it's all worth it now," said Dolan, who credited coach Butch Ukishima and mentor Stuart Gaessner for this season's successes.

Pac-Five's boys and girls teams had kayakers from ASSETS, La Pietra, Maryknoll, Sacred Hearts, Saint Louis and University High, and the mix of students contributed to the teams' success.

"The work they put into it, they reap the benefits," said Vi Coito, one of the Pac-Five coaches. "They see that and they also help out the big team. Being in the Pac-Five, they are very supportive of each other's schools and they try to help (each other). They don't think it's just Maryknoll or it's just Saint Louis, they think of themselves as a unit."

The Kamehameha boys and 'Iolani girls were the league's series winners, which combined points from the championship race and earlier races.
