Hawaii-Hilo runs the table in PacWest volleyball

Hawai'i-Hilo capped its perfect Pacific West Conference women's volleyball season by sweeping Hawai'i Pacific, 30-27, 31-29, 30-26, yesterday at St. Andrew's Priory.

Hillary Hurley had 16 kills, Fabiane Seben added 11 and Lauren Bayer had 10 for the PacWest champion Vulcans (23-5, 14-0).

Cari Kahn led the Sea Warriors (10-16, 4-10) with 11 kills.

In another PacWest match, Faylynn Merrick had 13 kills and five blocks as Brigham Young-Hawai'i beat Chaminade, 30-19, 30-11, 31-29, yesterday at the Cannon Activities Center in La'ie.

The Seasiders (13-9, 9-5) clinched second place in the PacWest. Samantha Miller had 12 kills to lead the Silverswords (15-7, 7-7).


BASEBALL

HONU WIN IN ROUT; SHARKS RALLY IN 9TH

Lou Santangelo hit a three-run home run and had five RBIs to lead the North Shore Honu past the West Oahu CaneFires, 14-7, yesterday in Hawaii Winter Baseball at Hans L'Orange Park.

The Honu (21-10) amassed 16 hits on the afternoon against the CaneFires (10-20-1).

In the nightcap, Miguel Abreu lined a three-run home run over the left-center field fence to rally the Honolulu Sharks past the Waikiki BeachBoys, 7-5.

Honolulu (15-15) was trailing 5-4 in the top of the ninth when Abreu crushed a Daniel Griffin offering, and put his squad up for good against Waikiki (15-16).


GOLF

ALI'I CUP SET FOR KONA COUNTRY CLUB NOV. 18

Kona Country Club will be the site of the Ali'i Cup Friday to Nov. 18. The match-play event is open to all amateurs and will feature Open, Senior (ages 51 to 61) and Golden Senior (62-older) flights.

The Cup starts with a qualifying round Friday on the Ocean Course. Match play is the final two days. Entry fee is $125. Entry forms are available at the club or online at www.808golf.com.

TOP-SEED HEINEMANN ADVANCES IN FUTURES

University of Hawai'i men's tennis players Jeff Fitch, Sascha Heinemann and Andreas Weber, and Hawai'i Pacific's Hendrik Bode advanced at the Oceanic Time Warner Cable 2007 Hono-lulu Futures pro circuit tournament yesterday at the UH Tennis Complex.

Top-seeded Heinemann earned a first-round bye in the qualifying singles draw as did Weber. Heinemann blanked Canadian Ehsan Arman, 6-0, 6-0, in second-round action. Weber, meanwhile, dispatched Nikola Petrov of Bulgaria, 6-1, 7-6 (5).

Both Rainbow Warriors are one win away from qualifying for the main draw.

Fitch was also victorious, outlasting Ash Misquith of Canada, 6-0, 6-7(3), 6-2, in the first round.

Bode defeated American Craig Faulk, 6-1, 6-0, in the first round.

Bode's HPU teammates Mark Mestan fell to Austria's Hubert Holzler, 6-3, 6-1, and Nikola Petrov lost to Germany's Andreas Weber, 6-1, 7-6.

Eight qualifiers will advance to the 64-player main draw, beginning Tuesday.

LAM LOSES IN WAIKOLOA SEMIFINALS, 6-2, 7-6 (2)

Australia's Carsten Ball defeated Honolulu's Chris Lam, 6-2, 7-6 (2), yesterday in the semifinals of the Hilton Waikoloa Village USTA Futures.

Ball will face Lester Cook for the singles title today. Cook defeated Nicholas Monroe, 6-1, 6-2, in the other semifinal.

Ball and Cook also advanced to today's doubles final.

WILDER PLACES 38TH IN NCAA WEST REGIONAL

University of Hawai'i senior Chantelle Wilder finished in 38th place at the NCAA West Regional Championship yesterday at the Springfield Country Club in Eugene, Ore.

Wilder's finish is the highest for a UH athlete at the Regional Championships since Victoria Chang placed 12th in 2002.

Wilder's time of 21 minutes, 24.89 seconds on the 6-kilometer course was a lifetime best and her fastest and highest placement at a Regional Championship.

As a team, the Rainbow Wahine placed 28th with 801 team points.

Stanford took the team title with 33 points and had three athletes place in the Top 10, including individual champion Teresa McWalters (19:57.30).

The other UH athletes were Jessi Locke (23:31.20, 168th), Briana Goodnight (25:45.35, 205th), Mallory Kurosumi (25:56.20, 207th), and Molly Fearn (28:15.45, 211th).
