Advertiser Staff

Some residents of Moanalua Valley were without running water last night after a 12-inch water main broke about 3 p.m. at 1445 Ala Aolani St., the Honolulu Board of Water Supply reported.

A water wagon was stationed at Ala Aoloa Place to provide water for residents, while a second water wagon was roving the area.

About 500 homes above Moanalua Golf Course had little or no water pressure. Kaiser Moanalua Medical Center was not affected. Repair work was expected to last through the night.

3 HIKERS RESCUED ON BIG ISLAND

Three women who lost their way while hiking Captains Drive Trail on the Big Island were found by rescue personnel about three-quarters of a mile off the trail Monday night, firefighters on the Big Island said.

The women were in Fern Forest, at the end of the Captains Drive Trail. Rescue units were called shortly after 7:30 p.m. They found the women before midnight and escorted them out, by foot, with no injuries.

Firefighters said the women were unfamiliar with the area and became disoriented upon nightfall when trying to return to their vehicle.

MAN A POSSIBLE DROWNING VICTIM

A man found floating face down in shallow water at Kahalu'u Beach on the Big Island Monday afternoon is believed to have drowned.

Medical personnel from the Big Island fire department responded to a possible drowning call shortly after noon Monday and were on the scene within five minutes.

Lifeguards had an unconscious man on a rescue board on the north end of the beach and were performing CPR, but couldn't revive him.

Preliminary reports are that the man died of cardiac arrest from a possible drowning.

MARIJUANA 'GROW HOUSE' DISCOVERED

Big Island police came across a marijuana "grow house" in Puna while searching for a wanted man this week, which led them to marijuana growing operations in Hilo and Minnesota.

Police have charged 52-year-old Joseph Palermo of Hilo with first-degree commercial promotion of marijuana and seven other drug offenses. His bail was set at $21,750, police said.

On Nov. 1, while searching for fugitive Randy White, officers found 196 marijuana plants in an Orchidland home that Palermo rents, police said. The next day, police found 43 marijuana plants and more than 27 grams of dried marijuana in a Hilo home owned by Palermo.

Police said they also found bonds and an unregistered gun in the home.

Further investigation found Palermo owns a home in West St. Paul, Minn., and that he had recently made several trips there. Minnesota police have searched the home and found about 200 marijuana plants, Big Island police said, and about a half-pound of dried marijuana.

Police were still looking for White, of Puna, who is wanted on a warrant for violating probation in a theft case.
