Flaming blades
Advertiser Staff
A synchronized flaming knife act sounds like a 911 call waiting to happen. But for the first time, the 15th annual World Fireknife Championships will feature a duet category that promises twice as much fire, twice as much risk and twice as much excitement. See it 7:45 p.m. today at the Polynesian Cultural Center, Hale Aloha Theater. Tickets are $8 for 12 and older and $6 for children 3 to 11. Information: 293-3333 or www.polynesia.com.

STEP IT UP
BE ACTIVE AND INVOLVED: WALK WITH YOUR KIDS
Walking with your children is a great way to instill the enjoyment of an active lifestyle. Try making an event out of taking a walk. A scavenger hunt or walk to a special destination such as the beach or park can make the trip interesting. Like adults, kids want to enjoy what they do. If there is a trail in your neighborhood, children often like to get off the road and explore the rocks and trees. Keep your walks short — kids like to go in spurts — and not too tiring. Be prepared to stop along the way to explore the surroundings. Let yourself go, and have fun. Remember, walking with children is a good way to get in your 30 minutes a day, the minimal daily recommendation for adults. For kids, the daily recommendation is to accumulate 60 minutes a day. Next week: Walking safely.

FINAL WORD
"Reggae is such a big part of my life because it's so soulful. Reggae music has slow songs, and I like slow songs. In a slow song, you have room to stretch your vocals out."
