ISLAND LIFE SHORTS
Fashion for the masses

Advertiser Staff and News Services

Payless Shoe Source isn't just for platform slippers — the cut-rate shoe store has jumped on the designer collabo bandwagon. New York's Abaeté — by designer Laura Poretzky — teamed up with Payless last year. In local stores now is the second Abaeté for Payless collection, which features pumps ($25), flats ($20) and handbags ($22 and $24) with mesh floral cut-out details in of-the-moment metallics and patent leathers, all at a fraction of the price of Abaeté's real stuff. With the collection flying off shelves, Payless is venturing farther down the haute road, with collections by Lela Rose and "Sex in the City" stylist Patricia Field slated to roll out for fall and the holidays. TEENTHINK

Judging people by their appearance, the ego and self-image, technology and society — these are the topics local high schoolers discuss on the spirited new show "Generation X and Why." Each week students from a selected school discuss an issue, and the talk can get heated. Created and hosted by entrepreneur Johnny B (he owns fast-food franchises, among other businesses), the show is his way of giving back to the community, said producer Tori Abe. The show airs at 5:30 p.m. Sundays on KHON 2 and 5:30 p.m. Saturdays on CW93. Up today: students who participate in Adult Friends for Youth talk about dropouts and violence.
