An unknown amount of sewage leaked into a storm drain near Maui Mall yesterday, according to the county Department of Public Works and Waste Management.

Officials said the spill occurred when a force main cracked in the the mall's parking lot near the intersection of Alamaha and Kamehameha Avenue in Kahului.

The spill was reported at 10:55 a.m. and stopped about 50 minutes later, officials said.

Standing water in the area was removed and disinfected. Officials were testing water in the drain last night to see if any contamination reached the ocean.

Repair work on the damaged pipe was expected to be completed by midnight.

POSSIBLE MURDER CHARGE FOR MAN

LIHU'E, Kaua'i — Police are considering murder charges against a 27-year-old Wailua man who kicked the 65-year-old grandmother of his child in the chest Wednesday during a squabble over the child.

Marie Annette Mundon, of Wailua, died Thursday at Wilcox Hospital, where she had been taken for treatment of her injuries.

Police said Mundon had been holding her grandchild in the driveway of her home about 7:15 p.m. Wednesday when the child's father arrived. The father shoved her and pulled the child away from her. The man, who is being held for questioning in the Kaua'i police cellblock, was not identified.

Police said Mundon's husband, James, 68, attacked the 27-year-old, and when Marie Mundon tried to pull her husband away from the affray, the 27-year-old man kicked her in the chest.

James Mundon drove his wife for treatment to the hospital, where she died the next day. He suffered minor injuries but did not require treatment, authorities said.

2 MEN CHARGED IN NA'ALEHU ROBBERY

Hawai'i County police have charged two men in connection with a home-invasion robbery earlier this month.

John Kalahiki, 21, and Roland Castaneda, 26, were charged Thursday in connection with the May 5 robbery at the Discovery Harbour subdivision in Na'alehu, police said.

Kalahiki, who lives in the subdivision, was charged with first-degree robbery, first-degree burglary, kidnapping, first-degree terroristic threatening and second-degree theft. His bail was set at $29,000.

Castaneda, of Na'alehu, was held on $5,000 bail on a charge of first-degree burglary.

STAMP PRICE GOES UP 2¢ ON MONDAY

Beginning Monday, the cost to mail a first-class letter will increase by two cents, to 41 cents. Each additional ounce will cost 17 cents.

The cost to mail a postcard is also rising, to 26 cents.

The postal service will have employees in the lobbies of the larger post offices Monday to explain the changes.
