Heartbeat radar wins tech award

Heart-sensing radar developed by University of Hawai'i associate professor Victor Lubecke was selected for one of three emerging-technology awards by TechConnect, an organization that helps commercial development of promising technologies.
Lubecke's radar can detect people through barriers and monitor their heartbeat, using principles of Doppler radar and wireless technology. Its uses could include healthcare.
HAWAIIAN TOPICS AT BUSINESS EXPO
The second annual Hawai'i Business Conference & Economic Expo is set for May 22-23 at the Hawai'i Convention Center. Topics include expanding businesses in the Pacific, work force development sensitive to Hawai'i's host culture, linking Hawaiian businesses to sole-source contracts and native arts' intellectual property rights. Experts also will talk about loans, trade fairs and networking.

SYSTEM TO TRACK PRODUCE FUNDED
The Hawaii Farm Bureau's O'ahu chapter has received $450,000 from the Economic Development Alliance of Hawaii to launch a radio-frequency identification device program to track boxes of produce from farms to retail grocery stores. A second grant of $500,000 was given to a Kaua'i farm group managed by Joe Munechika to restore agricultural water systems on abandoned sugar lands next to the Pacific Missile Range.
