Stanford senior swimmer Hongzhe Sun was selected to the Pacific 10 Conference All-Academic squad.
Sun, a 2003 'Iolani graduate, earned a 3.30 grade point average in management and sciences and technology.
Sun recently earned All-American honors at the NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships. He finished second in the 200-yard backstroke (1:40.78) and sixth in the 200 butterfly (1:44.39).
BASEBALL
Creighton junior Michael Lam (Punahou '04) batted 4 for 10, all doubles, in a four-game series against North Dakota State March 16 to 18.
Brigham Young senior utility player/designated hitter Apana Nakayama (Moloka'i '00) hit three home runs in games against Texas Christian and Utah.
He hit two homers, batting 3 for 3 with two RBIs and three runs in an 8-4 loss to Utah March 20. He hit his third home run of the week in a 12-11 win over Texas Christian. Brigham Young first baseman Kasey Ko (Punahou '06) went 2 for 4 with 2 RBIs in that game.
Nakayama did not play in Saturday's game "due to soreness in his left knee after a collision in the field in Friday's game," a release said.
"Nakayama previously had surgery on his right knee, but soreness in that knee was not a factor in the decision for him to sit Saturday's game," it added.
Cornell freshman third baseman Steven Dannaway (Punahou '06) recorded two of the three Cornell hits as the Big Red dropped its fourth straight game, losing to North Carolina A&T, 8-5, Thursday.
Dannaway hit a triple to left-center for his first collegiate RBI. He reached base all four times he came to the plate. He was also hit by a pitch and reached on a catcher's interference.
Willamette sophomore right-handed pitcher Kelsey Nakata (Mililani '05) was nominated for the Northwest Conference Pitcher of the Week.
Nakata picked up his second save of the season, going two innings giving up one hit and no runs in a 7-4 win over Whitworth Sunday.
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
Menlo (Atherton, Calif.) junior guard Kepua Lee (Moanalua '04) was named an NAIA DII All American honorable mention selection.
Lee was the Cal-Pac Player of the Year for the second consecutive season. In three years, Lee holds Menlo career records in points (1,364), field goals made (552) and attempted (1,293), free throws made (222) and attempted (327), and total rebounds (578).
MEN'S VOLLEYBALL
Pepperdine senior outside hitter Jon Grobe ('Iolani '02 of Kane'ohe) tallied 14 kills, nine digs and career-high eight blocks as the top-ranked Waves came back from a two-game deficit to beat Long Beach State, 23-30, 33-35, 30-20, 33-31, 15-12, Saturday.
SOFTBALL
Brigham Young junior outfielder Emi Snow (Kamehameha '04) hit a lead-off home run in the top of the seventh inning, but BYU fell to Illinois, 7-2, Saturday.
Portland State junior left fielder Kimi Daniel (Sacred Hearts '03) 1 for 4 with 2 RBIs in a 3-0 win over No. 13 Stanford Sunday.
GYMNASTICS
California-Berkeley senior Elyse Wong (Punahou '03) matched her season-high of 9.725 on the floor in a meet against UC Davis, Sacramento State and San Jose State Friday.
WOMEN'S GOLF
Idaho junior Kelly Nakashima (Baldwin '04) shot a record-tying 65 to lead the Vandals to third at the UNLV Spring Rebel Invitational March 12 to 14.
She shot 72-68-65—205 in the tournament at the Boulder Creek Golf Club in Boulder, Nev.
Nakashima tied for first place, but lost on the third playoff hole in a sudden death playoff.
"This was an unbelievable tournament for her," coach Brad Rickel said in a release. "This is one of the best tournaments a Vandal has played."
TRACK AND FIELD
Pacific (Ore.) sophomore Reggie Torres (Kamehameha '05 of Kahuku) earned his first Northwest Conference Championships qualifying spots in sprints with season-best times in the 100-meter dash (11.53 seconds, seventh place) and the 200 (23.41, 11th) at the Charles Bowles Spring Break Classic Friday.
WRESTLING
The United States Olympic Education Center's Shyla Iokia (Baldwin '05 of Wailuku) won the 59 kg (130 pounds) senior division at the Missouri Valley Showcase this weekend.
Freshman Cherae Pascua (Mililani '06) came in second at 55 kg (121 pounds).
COACHING
Becky Hogue (Punahou '03) was named head coach of the girls basketball team at Cheshire Academy in Cheshire, Conn.
Hogue will also teach English and American Literature at the school. She will graduate from Columbia in May. She averaged 5.3 points and 3 rebounds this season.
Isaiah Cavaco, who was born and raised in Hawai'i, took over the Division III Oberlin (Ohio) College basketball program Monday, a year after becoming interim coach.
Cavaco attended Punahou from kindergarten to eighth grade, then moved to Southern California. Oberlin was 5-20 overall, 4-12 in the North Coast Athletic Conference this season.
