POLICE BEAT
3-year-old girl dies after being left in car

Advertiser Staff

Honolulu police are investigating the death of a 3-year-old girl who died after being found unresponsive in a car yesterday afternoon in Makiki.

Police said they responded to a call of a juvenile needing aid in the Makiki area about 2 p.m. but upon arrival found that the victim had been transported from the scene.

Firefighters said the victim was brought by private individuals to the Makiki Fire Station and taken to Kapi'olani Medical Center for Women and Children, where she was pronounced dead.

KHON-TV reported last night that firefighters at the station said the girl had been left alone in the car for more than 90 minutes, then brought to the fire station after her father returned and found his daughter unconscious.

"He had the baby in his arms, cradling her," Fire Capt. Warren Aki told the station. "We knew as soon as we took hold of her that she was hot, and after that our main concern was she was without a pulse."

Police are investigating the case as an unattended death.
