MA'ALAEA
Lanes will be closed for work

Advertiser Staff

Intermittent lane closures will happen on Honoapi'ilani Highway at McGregor Point from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. today and 9 a.m. to noon tomorrow as part of the state Department of Transportation's ongoing rockfall-mitigation project.

A helicopter will drape ring nets over the cliffs above the two-lane highway to protect motorists during drilling, bolting and rock-removal operations. Both lanes will be closed for 10-minute periods while workers anchor the nets in place.

The emergency project was undertaken after the Oct. 15 earthquakes cracked and loosened boulders on the cliffside. The job involves a 3.3-mile stretch from Ma-'alaea and the pali tunnel.
