Hawai'i stocks take battering

It was a bad week to be holding most Hawai'i stocks as share prices slid lower and stock markets declined.
Shares of Hawaiian Holdings, parent company of Hawaiian Airlines, were hit the worst, shedding 15 percent of their value from the close of the market on Feb. 23 to the close yesterday.
During that time, the price fell to $4.42 from $5.20.
Also suffering in the past week were shares of Hoku Scientific, the Kapolei-based technology company. Its price fell 9.7 percent as shares declined 55 cents to $5.11.
Barnwell Industries had the distinction of showing a gain during the week, rising 8 cents to $21.02.
DIABETES WEB SITE LAUNCHED
www.SugarStats.com, a Big Island-based Web site, said it released the test version of its Internet-based diabetic management system.
The self-management system allows users to track, manage and monitor their most essential diabetic information online.
The data can also be selectively accessed by family members and healthcare professionals.
Marston Alfred, founder of the Volcano-based business, said plans call for eventually opening up a premium version of the site.
HORIZON LINES REPORTS PROFIT
Horizon Lines Inc., the No. 2 carrier of ocean cargo between the Mainland and Hawai'i, said it swung to a profit in the fourth quarter.
Net income in the three months ended Dec. 31 was $10.6 million, or 32 cents a share. That compared with a loss of $10.9 million, or 38 cents a share, a year earlier.
The Charlotte, N.C.-based company said the profit would have been higher if costs for a share offering and loss on early payment of debt were deducted.
Revenue totaled $287.5 million, an increase from the $279 million a year prior.
ENTRIES SOUGHT FOR TOP MARKETER
The Hawai'i chapter of the American Marketing Association is accepting entries for the 2007 marketer of the year.
The award will be presented at a luncheon May 8, at the Hawai'i Convention Center in Honolulu.
This competition is open to all Hawai'i-based businesses, organizations or professionals, and is not limited to AMA members.

BLESSING TODAY FOR CARGO FACILITY
Gov. Linda Lingle will participate in the blessing of a new cargo facility for Pacific Air Cargo and Kalitta Air at Honolulu International Airport this afternoon.
A state spokesman said the facility will serve as Pacific Air Cargo's hub for the Pacific, as well as repair and maintenance center for Kalitta Air's aircraft.
