The top four winners of Japan-America Society of Hawaii's Japan Wizards Statewide Academic Team Competition were Hanalani School, Konawaena High School, Leilehua High School and St. Andrew's Priory. The Society will send these four teams on an all-expense paid trip to Japan this summer to reinforce and complement what the students have learned.
New board members of Habitat for Humanity Kona are: Scott Craven, managing director of MacArthur & Company Sotheby's International Realty; Pete Hendricks, former County of Hawai'i deputy managing director; and Brenda Lam, a master of landscape architecture and environmental planning who specializes in resort and multi-family projects. Habitat for Humanity Kona celebrated its first double home dedication recently in the Ocean View area.
Maui Arts & Cultural Center's annual Chairman's Dinner was celebrated recently. The highlight of the event was the presentation of the Pundy Yokouchi Visionary in the Arts Awards. Recipients were: Masaru "Pundy" Yokouchi, individual award; Envisions Entertainment and Productions Inc., business; William & Margery Zellerbach Foundation, foundations; Lana'i High and Elementary School and Lana'i Cultural & Heritage Center, community partners. Jim Sanders and Colleen Cochlin received the 2007 Mike Lyons "I Love Maui" Award.
The Hawaiian Kids Team from Waialua High School placed second at the 2007 New Jersey FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Regional Robotics Competition, sponsored by Johnson & Johnson. The team was sponsored by the University of Hawai'i's physics department, NAVSEA Detachment Pacific, R.M. Towill Corp., Castle & Cooke Inc., Dole Plantation, McInerny Foundation, Waialua Federal Credit Union, Matsumoto Shave Ice Inc. and Waialua Complex 21st CCLC Grant.
The University of Hawai'i-Manoa Marching Band is one of five bands nationwide receiving top honors from the College Band Directors National Association. The band entered a tape of its Nov. 11, 2006, performance of Latin music and dance staged at the Rainbow Invitational Band Festival at Aloha Stadium. Band director Brandt Payne will present a videotaped band performance at the CBDNA national conference in Ann Arbor, Mich.
Hawai'i Pacific University associate professor of English Dr. Elaine Leilani Madison recently spoke at the 2007 Conference on College Composition and Communication Annual Convention in New York City. Her presentation was entitled "Negotiating Conflicting Identities: A Model for Nonviolent Classroom Communication." Madison teaches Shakespeare, background to Western literature and introductory literature and composition courses. She is writing a book on redefining Western literary tradition.
Chaminade University students Cheley Reyes and Crystal Weseman were recognized recently by the Hawaii Pacific Islands Campus Compact for their inspiration in service to the community at the Fifth Annual Statewide Service-Learning Conference. The award recognizes students who exhibit outstanding leadership and innovative approaches in their community service or service-learning endeavors both on campus and in the community.
Nanci Kreidman, co-founder and executive director of the Domestic Violence Clearinghouse and Legal Hotline, has been selected by Soroptimist International of Waikiki to receive its 2007 Making a Difference for Women Award. She has been bolstering local and national efforts to address family violence issues for more than 20 years.
Sarah Casken, founding executive director and leader of the Hawaii Foster Parent Association since 1992, will leave her post this summer. HFPA has begun a search for a successor and hopes this summer to introduce its new executive director. There are currently more than 2,300 foster and adoptive families in the state.
