An America West Boeing 757 flight from Las Vegas to Honolulu was diverted to Hilo, Hawai'i, this weekend when one of its two engines shut down after experiencing vibrations.
America West Flight 22 ended up landing in Hilo at 8:51 p.m. Saturday without incident, Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Ian Gregor said. The FAA is investigating the incident, he said.
Aloha Airlines, which is the local contractor for America West, sent over a charter flight to pick up the plane's 127 passengers, said Scott Ishikawa, spokesman for the state Department of Transportation.
The charter flight arrived in Honolulu at 11:30 p.m., Ishikawa said. No injuries were reported.
Passenger Chris Corley said the problem was detected about 2 1/2 hours from Honolulu when a "clunk" was heard. Crew members announced a mechanical problem had occurred.
