Current Washington State and former 'Iolani guard Derrick Low scored 14 points in an 84-58 U.S. romp of the U.S. Virgin Islands at the Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, yesterday.

Low, who started his second consecutive game, shot 5 of 14 from the field, including 3 of 8 from 3-point range in 26 minutes. He also had two assists and a steal.

"Derrick Low's really been a spark for our team," U.S. coach Jay Wright said on www.USABasketball.com. "He's so intelligent, so tough defensively and a great shooter, obviously. He's brought a lot to this team and thank God he's kept a great attitude through this tournament because he's really led us these last two games."

Indiana's D.J. White led the U.S. with 22 points. Georgetown's Roy Hibbert added 11 points and Vanderbilt's Shan Foster 10. Frank Elegar led the Virgin Islands with 10 points.

The U.S. plays Panama in the fifth-place game today.

Also, Eric Abbott of Honolulu finished eighth with Danny Ching in the K2 500-meter men's kayak race yesterday.

"This was a huge eye-opener for us," said Abbott, after the Americans didn't win any medals in canoe or kayak competition.

"It's a lot different to race internationally," he said. "The competition is really tough. There is a lot we need to work on, but we're young and can make huge improvements."
