Want to put a little fun in your exercise? How about a little variety in your pet's activity?

You can accomplish both by signing up for the Hawaiian Humane Society's PetWalk, to be held on Sunday, Oct. 7. It's a fun way to head toward a goal of regular exercise. Anticipate burning at least 198 calories while completing the two-mile walking course through Magic Island and Ala Moana Beach Park.

A 2006 Center for Disease Control Prevention study found that walking a dog can help increase physical activity for people and their dogs.

This is your chance. Some 3,000 humans are expected to attend this year's PetWalk. Dogs on leashes, cats in walking jackets, birds on shoulders, turtles in hand and mice in carriers have all been seen at PetWalk events.

Eight-year participant Susan Ballard said she enjoys "the camaraderie of PetWalk. I'm also in awe of the amount and variety of pets that are brought to the event and amazed that they all seem to get along with each other."

PetWalk supporters drop off their pledges at 7 a.m., then get ready for the walk at 8 a.m. In addition to the two-mile course, the event features a small route for short-legged pets, refreshments for humans and animals, a pet costume contest and other activities.

The 17th annual PetWalk celebrates the efforts of Humane Society supporters who aim to raise more than $160,000 to help pay for the nonprofit's community programs and services, including:

Investigations and rescues — From Kahala to Ka'a'awa, humane investigators help stray animals, work on feral-cat issues and investigate cruelty and complaints every day, adding up to about 15,000 calls for service a year.

Lost and found — The society reunites more than 4,000 lost pets with their families every year.

Pet visitation — Animals bring joy to places where love and healing is needed at more than 50 senior and healthcare facilities.

Humane education — Educators teach children about kindness to animals and pet care.
