All you need is access to a computer and an interest in making where you live a better place to become part of the myAdvertiser.com community Web sites.
MyAdvertiser.com is a network of sites that now covers every community on O'ahu, focusing on neighborhood news, photos and resources.
Today we launch the final three of 23 Web sites covering the communities of Makiki/McCully/Mo'ili'ili, Nu'uanu/Punchbowl, and Diamond Head/Kapahulu.
The free neighborhood sites each contain community-specific breaking news, local articles written by Advertiser reporters and staff from our community "People" newspapers, and most important, photos and news reports produced by residents themselves.
"With the addition of these final three community sites, we have O'ahu covered in a way that no other news source can match," said Mark Platte, vice president and editor of The Advertiser. "Coupled with our seven People publications, we have more local news than ever. We ask our readers to please send us their stories and photos to help us cover their communities."
The community news team at The Advertiser has been building about three sites a month since November for residents from Kahuku to Hawai'i Kai, from Wai'anae to Pearl City, from the North Shore to 'Ewa Beach and from 'Aina Haina to Salt Lake.
"It's been a lot of work these last eight months creating these Web sites and making them relevant to each community, but it has been worth it," said James Gonser, community news editor at The Advertiser. "Our online readers now have a place to quickly find news about their neighborhood."
MyAdvertiser.com uses a computer tool called GetPublished! that allows readers to submit their own news articles and photos. The stories can be on anything from school concerts and craft fairs to paddling results or scholarships being offered by civic clubs. Submitting stories is free and they are published directly on your community Web site.
On the sites right now you can read about:
Kapolei High School student Lorifel Nabong took part in a focus group last year to help determine what residents would find useful on community sites. Nabong, who was editor of the school newspaper, helped get students involved with the myAdvertiser.com/Kapolei Web site.
"I'd like to say congratulations and that it turned out really great!" Nabong said.
Other features of the Web sites include breaking news updates, a comprehensive community calendar, complete school information, local bloggers and traffic and weather reports.
