Tsukasa Matsueda is the rare Japanese-American who is fluent in Japanese and English. This allowed the California educator to gather the stories of notoriously shy first-generation Japanese immigrants and formulate a theory: That these people, whom he calls "the shadow generation," reached across language and cultural barriers to teach their children values that served that group well — even though the children often resisted their parents' ideas. Matsueda will give a free talk at 3:30 p.m. tomorrow at the Japanese Cultural Center of Hawai'i about his book "Issei: A Shadow Generation Rooted in Japanese Values, Planted on American Soil" ($15.60). Information: 945-7633.
