Warriors No. 24 in coaches' rankings

Advertiser Staff and News Services

The University of Hawai'i football team finished No. 24 in the final USA Today coaches' poll of the season.

It was the first time UH was nationally ranked in a final football poll since 1992, when it was No. 20 in both The Associated Press and USA Today/ESPN polls.

"That's awesome," UH quarterback Colt Brennan said of the No. 24 ranking. "Obviously you want to be as high as you can be at the end of the year. If we beat Oregon State (in the regular-season finale), we're looking at an unbelievable ranking."

But the Warriors missed out on finishing in the AP top-25 rankings, earning the 26th-most points.

"You're kidding me," UH coach June Jones said. "I thought we would have finished higher than that."

Jones also was disappointed Boise State, also a member of the Western Athletic Conference, was ranked fifth, despite finishing as the only undefeated NCAA Division I-A team.

"They should have finished higher, too," Jones said. "That's the way it goes."

Florida was No. 1 in both polls.
