  • The Honolulu Community Media Council will host a panel discussion next week on the media's response to emergencies. The panel — with representatives of print and broadcast media, state government and the public — will focus on difficulties encountered by government and the media in the aftermath of the Oct. 15 earthquakes, after which 70 percent of the state's broadcast stations were compromised. Panelists include Mark Platte, vice president/editor of The Honolulu Advertiser; Chuck Cotton, vice president and general manager of seven Honolulu radio stations owned by Clear Channel; Michael Titterton, general manager of Hawai'i Public Radio; Marsha Weinert, the state administration's liaison to the visitor industry — and co-chair of the Comprehensive Communications Review Committee that proposed communications improvements after the earthquakes; and Honolulu communications consultant Doug Carlson, writer of the Citizens Helping Officials Respond to Emergencies Web log. The panel will also discuss measures taken since "Earthquake Sunday" to strengthen media operations and improve the chain of emergency communications from state Civil Defense and other authorities to the public.   • Kapi'olani Community College and the Office of Hawaiian Affairs' Native Hawaiian Revolving Fund will offer a 51-hour course, "Entrepreneurship," during the spring term. The evening class is designed for people who want to start a business, turn a hobby into a money-making venture, or get their business plan ready to present to a loan officer. Topics will include business planning, marketing, advertising and promotion, selling strategies, marketing research, managing financial statements, pricing strategies. The subjects also include regulatory, tax, personnel and legal concerns; and resources and lending. The class will be offered 5:30-8:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, beginning March 20.   • Austin, Texas; Baton Rouge, La.; Orlando, Fla.; San Francisco; and Philadelphia are among metropolitan areas with extensive public wireless high-speed Internet coverage. Progress toward a "WIRELESS HONOLULU" will be the focus of a speech next week by the city's information technology director, Gordon Bruce. He speaks to a meeting of the Hawai'i TeleCommunications Association, scheduled 11:30 a.m. Feb. 28 at the Hale Koa Hotel, Waikiki Showroom.
