BYUH sweeps Notre Dame de Namur in hoops

Wu Tai-hao scored 18 points as Brigham Young Hawai'i defeated Notre Dame de Namur, 81-62, yesterday in a Pacific West Conference men's basketball game at Belmont, Calif.
Eric Boyce and Jermaine Odjegba each added 12 points and Lucas Alves scored 10 for the Seasiders (18-7, 10-3 PacWest).
Chris Clock led the Argonauts (7-14, 1-10) with 17 points.
Tai-hao hit 7 of 9 from the field, including 3 of 3 from 3-point range, to score all 18 of his points in the first half when BYUH surged ahead 44-36.

Latoya Wily had 21 points and 16 rebounds — her 20th double-double of the season — as the Seasiders (11-12, 9-4) rolled past the Argonauts (7-16, 6-5) at Belmont, Calif.Kayla Burningham added 19 points, Juanita Afamasaga 12 and Lesina Funaki 10 for BYUH, which used a 12-0 run to overcome a 20-18 deficit and seize control late in the first half.
Ashley Wilson led Notre Dame de Namur with 20 points.

HPU SWEEPS BYUH
Courtney Kessel pitched a four-hitter with eight strikeouts as Hawai'i Pacific beat Brigham Young-Hawai'i, 2-1, yesterday to complete a sweep at the Sea Warrior Field.
Casey Sugihara's two-run double in the fifth inning won it for the Sea Warriors (3-1). Jana Dewey homered for the Seasiders (3-3).
HPU won the opener, 8-0, in a game shortened to five innings by the mercy rule.
Sherise Musquiz allowed four hits and struck out four to lead the Sea Warriors, who were held to three hits but drew eight walks and scored seven runs in the first inning.

'AIEA'S OHIA HONORED
'Aiea High linebacker Mana Ohia was named one of 50 recipients of the National Old Spice Red Zone Player of the Year, according to a press release from Old Spice.
He was featured in a full-page ad in Thursday's USA Today along with the other honorees, the release said.
'Aiea coach Wendell Say, who nominated Ohia, said the selection was based on performance, leadership and academics. Ohia was a captain this past season and a third-team All-State selection. Say said Ohia also is a good student.
He isn't the first 'Aiea player to earn the honor. In 2001, Bryan Tucker-Sallas was one of the 50 selections in a class that also featured Shawne Merriman, linebacker for the San Diego Chargers.
Ohia is looking at attending a small college in Virginia, Say said.
According to the press release, Ohia was picked among 4,500 nominees nationwide.

HPU'S DOYLE RETIRES
Frank Doyle has retired as head coach of the men's soccer program at Hawai'i Pacific after 12 years, according to a school release.
"It was just time," said Doyle, who led HPU to an 8-7-2 record in its return to the NCAA level after a six-year hiatus. "Coaching at such a high level for so long is very demanding, and my body told me it was time to go."
Doyle guided the program at the NAIA, club, and NCAA Division II levels.
"We are very pleased with the fine work Frank has done at HPU over the years," said HPU President Chatt G. Wright. "While we will miss him tremendously, he will always be a member of the HPU family and great Sea Warrior tradition."
Doyle has served as the commissioner of the Hawai'i Youth Soccer Organization and president of the Bulls Soccer Club of Hawai'i.
CROSS COUNTRY
HONMA TO COACH CU
Karl Honma, whose teams won 17 Big Island Interscholastic Federation titles, has been named cross country coach at Chaminade.
Honma, a teacher at 'Iolani School where he coached the girls team for one season, also assisted with the Hawai'i Pacific program.
"We are pleased to select such a qualified individual to lead our cross country program," said Chaminade athletic director Kaia Hedlund. "We lost a coach in James Oshiro who will certainly be missed, but after an extensive search, we have found someone who we believe will be a great fit at Chaminade."
