BIG ISLAND
Filing deadline is today for home tax exemptions

Advertiser Staff

The deadline to file for an exemption to reduce property taxes for owner occupants is today.

If you own or lease a home or condominium on the Big Island and use it as your principal residence, you may qualify for a home exemption, which could reduce your property tax bill.

People who file by today will be granted the tax benefits for the year that begins July 1.

Veterans who are totally disabled due to injuries received while on duty with the armed forces of the United States may be exempted from all property taxes except for the minimum tax.

People affected with Hansen's disease or who are totally disabled may also be exempted from all but the minimum tax on property with a total taxable value of up to $50,000.

For more information, contact the Real Property Tax Office at (808) 961-8201 or (808) 327-3540. Forms are at www.hawaiipropertytax.com
