LEEWARD
31 affordable single-family homes planned in Ma'ili

Habitat for Humanity Leeward O'ahu Inc., a nonprofit organization, is proposing to demolish eight dilapidated houses and develop 31 single-family homes on a 3.215-acre property at 87-119 Kaukamana Road in Wai'anae, on the makai side of Kaukamana Road in Ma'ili.

The proposed project consists of 31 home sites for two- , three- , four- , five- and six-bedroom single-family homes, intended to house low-income families, according to a notice of the Office of Environmental Quality Control.

The nonprofit will work with families and community volunteers to build affordably priced self-help housing for the proposed project. In order to participate in the program, families must work with the group and other volunteers to contribute at least 500 "sweat equity" hours toward the building of their home, the office said.

Current tenants of the proposed project site have been informed that they will need to move during the course of development.

However, they will get first choice to choose their lots, and will be the first to have their houses built, in order to minimize their relocation time. The applicant will be seeking land- use exemptions to allow development of the project.
