UH to host Internet conference

The University of Hawai'i will host a global conference on Internet technologies Jan. 20-25.
The "Techs in Paradise" conference will bring together more than 300 of the world's leading Internet engineers and architects from North America and Asia.
The conference is organized by the Internet2 research and education consortium and the Asian-Pacific Advanced Network, its regional counterpart.
"Hawai'i provides the perfect venue to bring together the advanced networking communities from both sides of the Pacific," said David Lassner, UH chief information officer and vice president for information technology.

COFFEE DEAL PART OF 'A REVOLUTION'
Pacific Land and Coffee Corp., a Honolulu-based company that sells private-label coffee, said it acquired a 71.5 percent stake in Integrated Coffee Technologies Inc., a firm developing coffee plants that produce caffeine-free beans and those that can be controlled by growers to improve harvests and processing efficiency.
Pacific Land said the acquisition consisted of issuing 7.64 million shares of its common stock and that it will seek the remaining ownership interest in Integrated Coffee.
"The acquisition of Integrated Coffee Technologies is not only complementary to our existing business but provides our shareholders with the opportunity to participate in a revolution in the coffee industry," said Dale Nielsen, Pacific Land chief executive officer, in a press statement. Pacific Land also brokers green bean coffee under the Coscina Brothers Coffee brand.
Pacific Land trades on the Over-the-Counter Bulletin Board market under the symbol PLFF.
SAFEWAY ISSUES GROUND BEEF ALERT
Safeway issued an advisory for Hawai'i and four other states after being notified by the USDA that it may have received ground beef products with a strain of Salmonella Newport between Sept. 19 and Nov. 5.
Safeway said it was not issuing a recall and that no ground beef currently in stores is the subject of the alert, which pertains to ground beef that may have been sold at Safeway stores seven or more weeks ago.
"To date, no Safeway product has tested positive for Salmonella Newport and the USDA has not definitively identified one product, retailer or establishment that is the source of the contamination," Safeway said in a press statement.
"In response to the alert, however, the company is asking customers who have raw ground beef products in their freezer purchased in these particular states between Sept. 19 and Nov. 5 to discard the product, as advised by the USDA."
Safeway said people with safety questions can call the USDA Meat and Poultry Hotline at 888-674-6854.
S. CALIFORNIANS CHOOSE HAWAI'I
Hawai'i is the top vacation destination for Southern Californians who are boarding flights to get away for year-end holidays, according to a report from the Automobile Club of Southern California.
The organization said about 5.6 million Southern Californians will travel during the last two weeks of 2007. That's a slight increase from the number who took trips during the Christmas-New Year's period last year.
It said about eight in 10 people who are getting away will do so by car. Another 840,000 will fly to their destinations.
