KAILUA
Grant awarded to help native plant revegetation

Advertiser Staff

The Office of Hawaiian Affairs has awarded a $23,066 grant to continue native plant revegetation and the creation of wetland bird habitat at Kawai Nui Marsh.

'Ahahui Malama I ka Lokahi, a Native Hawaiian conservation group, will use the money to make improvements at Na Pohaku o Hauwahine, located in the marsh. A water pump system will be upgraded, and dry forest plants will be purchased to allow for the continued expansion of the 12-acre site, where thousands of volunteers have worked to restore it, under the guidance of 'Ahahui Malama I ka Lokahi.

The marsh is a Ramsar Wetlands of International Importance, one of 22 in the United States.
