BYUH women's soccer sweeps major awards

Call it a sophomore sweep.

In just its second year of participation, the Brigham Young-Hawai'i women's soccer team compiled a record of 13-6-1 (10-2 PacWest) en route to the 2007 conference championship.

Conference coaches recognized the magnitude of the accomplishment this week, handing the Seasiders a near-clean sweep of the postseason awards.

Senior co-captain Jill Haar was named player of the year after totaling 15 goals and seven assists. Haar was earlier named to the 2007 Daktronics All-Far West Region second team.

Head coach Justin Wagar, a BYUH soccer alum, automatically earned coach of the year honors for winning the conference championship. His record at BYUH is 25-10-1 (18-4) in two years at the school.

BYUH freshman Becky Ploeger earned goalie of the year honors after holding opponents to just 1.06 goals per game.

The only award BYUH didn't win outright was newcomer of the year, which freshman forward Sarah Welty (six goals, four assists) shared with Hawai'i-Hilo freshman midfielder Vanessa Butin.

Butin, a graduate of Moanalua, finished the season with three goals and five assists.

MEN'S HONORS

With its second straight title and the 2007 conference player of the year in junior defender Bosko Jovicevic, the Grand Canyon men's soccer team can lay claim to being the PacWest's "now" team. But there's also ample evidence that the conference's four Hawai'i teams will have a say in who's next.

BYUH senior midfielder Brian Noguera and HPU freshman midfielder Linus Ekden were voted co-newcomers of the year by PacWest coaches.

Notre Dame de Namur's Sheldon Steenhuis was voted goalkeeper of the year. Grand Canyon's Petar Draksin earned automatic coach of the year honors for winning the conference.

Noguera, a two-time conference player of the week, led the PacWest in points (23), finishing the season with nine goals (second in the conference) and five assists. He was earlier named to the 2007 Daktronics All-Far West Region second team.

Ekden, a native of Sweden, started 14 of 15 games for the Sea Warriors, scoring three goals and posting one assist.
