Entrants sought for competition

Chaminade University and American Savings Bank will conduct a business plan competition for local nonprofit organizations.

The contest, which will be overseen by the Hogan Entrepreneurial Program at Chaminade, will be open to new Hawai'i nonprofit organizations and to existing local nonprofits that are starting a new program or a new subsidiary.

Entrants must send in a statement of intent by Sept. 21 and must submit their business plans by Oct. 19. The address is: The Hogan Entrepreneurial Program, Chaminade University of Honolulu, 3140 Wai'alae Ave., Honolulu, HI 96816.


MALL WORKERS TO HELP FINISH HOME

More than 30 employees of shopping mall operator General Growth Properties plan to help complete a seven-bedroom residence in Wai'anae for a homeless family of 13 on Saturday.

The home at 89-201 Nanaikala St. has been under construction for six months using labor from more than 500 volunteers led by Habitat for Humanity.

The house on Hawaiian Homestead land is the largest Habitat home ever produced on O'ahu, and is for the Kaneakua family that has lived on the beach for years.

General Growth employees plan to pitch in with interior painting and other work from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The project is one of several that General Growth is involved with as part of a three-year partnership with Habitat to raise awareness, money and volunteer labor toward combating homelessness statewide.


WORKSHOP OFFERED ON LEASING OFFICES

The High Technology Development Corp. will hold a workshop on leasing commercial office space from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Aug. 29 at the Manoa Innovation Center's Presentation Room.

"The A-B-C's of Leasing Commercial Office Space" is geared toward high-technology firms and small businesses and will feature representatives from Hawai'i Commercial Real Estate LLC. Sheila Chong and Victor Arcayena, office leasing and sales specialists, will lead the workshop.

NEW MEMBERS INVITED TO SOCIAL

The Maui Chamber of Commerce will have a new members social from 7:30 to 9 a.m. Sept. 7 in Kahului.

Members who have joined the organization since May 25 are invited to attend and make a short presentation about their business.

The free event, which includes a continental breakfast, will be at the Maui Contractors Association Conference Room, adjacent to the chamber offices at 313 Ano St.
