$85M will help UH projects statewide

The University of Hawai'i will get an $85 million infusion of money for construction and maintenance projects on 10 campuses, Gov. Linda Lingle announced yesterday.

A big chunk of the money — $35 million — will be used for design and construction of the new four-year undergraduate college at UH-West O'ahu. The campus serves about 850 students and is expected to expand to more than 7,500 students with 1,000 faculty and staff on a new Kapolei campus in coming years.

The money released this week will be used for campus infrastructure, including new sewer lines and a water reservoir.

Another $50 million will be used for repairs and maintenance at campus facilities statewide, Lingle said. Those projects include:

  • $21 million for UH-Manoa facilities including the Art Building, Biomedical Sciences Building, George Hall, Music Building Complex, the Physical Education/Athletics Complex, Institute for Astronomy, College of Education and Hamilton and Sinclair libraries.

  • $16.3 million for improvements to the seven community colleges. The projects include repairing, reroofing, electrical repairs, air condition and safety improvements.

  • $11.9 million for renovations of laboratories, fencing the soccer field, reroofing and other improvements at UH-Hilo.
